How to create a communication plan for marketing.

Your marketing communication plan covers:

  • Who you want to reach with your marketing (your target audience groups)
  • What you want to communicate (your messaging)
  • How you will communication (your marketing mix or the different ways you will communicate with your various target audience groups like advertising, email marketing, PR, trade shows, direct mail, etc.)
  • When you will communicate (your marketing communications calendar)
  • How you will measure success (your marketing communications effectiveness measures)
  • What your marketing communications budget will be and how it will be spent.
Every company (large or small) has the same marketing goals:
  • Get customers
  • Keep customers
  • Get existing customers to buy more
  • Offload unprofitable customers
  • Create customer advocates (people who refer others and spread positive word-of-mouth about you for free)

It's how well you do all of this that determines your success.

TIP:  The 80/20 rule applies to marketing communication plans. Spend 80% of your time thinking and only 20% of your time writing the communication plan.
