Who you can hire to help you create your direct mail

  • Hire a full-service direct mail agency that will act as your "general contractor" to select and manage all the various "sub-contractor" specialists (mailing houses, printers, graphic designers, copywriters, printers).

From our experience

From our experience:  You can use a full-service marketing agency but they are generalists who may not have specific expertise in direct mail marketing.  If you're investing in direct mail, we'd suggest you select and hire an agency that specializes in this type of marketing so you benefit from all their accumulated knowledge about what works and what doesn't.

Know this

Know this: Most agencies will only want to take on clients who have large direct mail budgets in the range of $50,000+.  If that's not your situation, you may want to find a freelancer with expertise in direct mail project management and planning.

  • Hire a freelance marketing project manager with expertise in direct mail who can develop your direct mail plan and manage all the specialists needed for direct mail.

    • Find full-service marketing freelancers on MarketingZone - be sure to look for someone with expertise in direct mail and also ideally marketing in your industry and type of business.

From our experience

From our experience:  It's very important to find freelance graphic designers and copywriters who have specific expertise in direct mail because it's a very different skill set than writing or designing other types of marketing.  You want to benefit from the accumulated expertise of someone who has specialized in direct mail and has learned what works and what doesn't.

Know this

Know this: If you plan to hire a freelance graphic designer and copywriter, you want to make sure that they work well together.  At a direct mail agency, they'll have teams of designers and copywriters.  If you're opting to hire a freelance graphic designer and copywriter, you may want to hire one and then ask them who they work well with and then interview and check references on those people.  You need the graphic designer and copywriter to work well together to get the best results.
